The Meaning of an Anchor

Jul 27, 2020 | 2 min read

Although an anchor may seem like a simple object that hold ships in place, its symbolism extends much farther than a ship weight. Hope, journey, and strength - the anchor encompasses all three. When given as a gift, it can also mean friendship and commitment.

Anchor as a Symbol

The most straight forward meaning of an anchor is strength. This is from the physical anchor's ability to park a ship that is significant bigger. This firm and steadfastness can also mean stability

A different side of the anchor's symbolism is journey. For sailors, taking an anchor out of the ocean means the start of a new adventure. As they end their journey, they often gain new insights and return as a new person. This can be a metaphor for when someone might feel stuck in a stagnant stage of their life and their hope to set sail on a new chapter.

Historically, the anchor also served as an important symbol of hope for Christians. In order to avoid persecution for following the Christian Religion, they couldn't be loudly declare their faith in public. Instead, they often wore anchors (jewelry and tattoos) in place of a cross. This let them slip away from Roman persecution, yet express their firm faith and hope in Christ.

Meaning of Anchor as Gifts

The meaning of the anchor has evolved over the centuries. While the core symbolism has remained, the anchor has also become an expression of friendship and commitment

Although the origin is uncertain, it is not surprising that the anchor has become a popular icon to gift to friends. Since the anchor means strength and stability, it is a great way to express your relationships. It has now become a trend to give stationary, clothing, and jewelry with an anchor design.
